What Does the Governor of Georgia Actually Do?

Non-partisan · Updated June 18, 2026

The short version

The governor is the head of Georgia's executive branch — the person who runs state government day to day. They propose the state budget, sign or veto bills the legislature passes, appoint people to state boards and agencies, and serve as commander-in-chief of Georgia's military forces (like the National Guard). It's one of the most powerful elected offices that directly shapes life in the state.

The budget is the biggest lever

Every year the governor proposes a state budget for the General Assembly to consider. Because so much of what state government does — schools, roads, health programs, public safety — runs on that budget, the governor's spending priorities are arguably their single most powerful tool. The legislature can change the budget, but the governor sets the starting point.

Signing and vetoing laws

When the Georgia legislature passes a bill, it goes to the governor, who can sign it into law or veto it. A veto can be overridden, but only by a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate — a high bar — so the veto gives the governor real influence over what becomes law.

Appointments and emergencies

The governor appoints members to many state boards and commissions, shaping policy well beyond their own term. As 'conservator of the peace,' the governor also leads the state's response to emergencies — natural disasters, public-safety crises — and can call the legislature into special session.

Term limits

Georgia's governor is elected to a four-year term and can serve at most two consecutive terms, after which they must wait four years before running again. That's why an incumbent who has served two terms can't simply run again — the seat opens up.
